Here we have the music video of the cover that Xentrix made of the Ghostbusters theme, one of those songs that became embedded in our pop culture, a catchy and iconic melody that transcended generations, appearing in movies, TV, and even inspiring countless covers.
For those who don’t know what’s going on, this reinterpretations of this UK thrash metal band should be unexpected, but I consider it a classic that gave the tune a high-speed, uplift and riff-heavy twist. The music video was recorded from MTV, which wasn’t the best source for metal back then, but it had its moments, and it has a legitimate old VHS effect that brings nostalgia and all that.
By the way, hailing from Preston, Lancashire, Xentrix was formed in 1984 as Sweet Vengeance and renamed in 1988, they were a staple of the UK thrash scene alongside Acid Reign, Onslaught, and Sabbat. Xentrix released four albums before splitting in 1997 — Shattered Existence (1989), For Whose Advantage? (1990), Kin (1992), and Scourge (1996) — and later reunited, releasing Bury the Pain (2019) and Seven Words (2022). They sound a bit like Testament, the vocals especially, and Forbidden. Some good influences right there.
Their this cover was first appeared on the Ghostbusters EP (1989 or 1990, Roadrunner Records), which also included:
- Nobody’s Perfect
- Interrogate
The lineup for this recording featured:
- Chris Astley – vocals, guitar
- Kristian Havard – guitar
- Paul MacKenzie – bass
- Dennis Gasser – drums
I think I heard them playing it in some live concert recording, but that might be a Mandela Effect. Anyway, Xentrix’s take on the Ghostbusters theme shows how a playful pop-culture staple can be transformed into a thrash metal experience — fast, precise, and unapologetically heavy — demonstrating the band’s ability to merge humor with musical ferocity.
