Originally published on November 21, 2023, the official video for Hell, Fire and Damnation marks the release of the title track from Saxon’s album — a song that blends a bit of Dio’s vibe with everything one could expect from this legendary band of British heavy metal.
Vocalist and founder Biff Byford says that the phrase giving the song its title has been with him since childhood:
“My dad used to say ‘Hell, fire and damnation, what’s tha’ been doing now?!’ whenever I messed something up. It was a very common saying in Yorkshire,” Biff recalls, laughing.
According to him, the song explores the eternal clash between good and evil, the album’s central theme:
“There are so many songs about hell and the devil that I thought it was time to write one about the struggle between good and evil. We all have to choose which side we’re on.”
The video — directed, produced, and edited by Paul M. Green, with cameras by Anthony Graham, Ben Ripley, Gwyn Hemmings, and Green himself — delivers all the power and energy one expects from Saxon.
The album Hell, Fire and Damnation dives into themes of history and mystery across ten strong, confident tracks. Biff delivers some of his most intense vocals in years, while Nigel Glockler (drums) and Nibbs Carter (bass) build a solid rhythmic foundation, and the guitars of Doug Scarratt and Brian Tatler perfectly complement each other.
Produced by Andy Sneap (Judas Priest, Exodus, Accept) in partnership with Biff Byford — and also mixed and mastered by Sneap — the album features tracks like Fire and Steel, described as a direct tribute to metal, and Pirates of the Airwaves, an homage to the origins of the NWOBHM. Meanwhile, There’s Something in Roswell stands out as “a cosmic arena-worthy gem.”

Lyrics
Child of Satan or lamb of God
The choice is yours to make
Rule the heavens high or reign in hell
Satanic rites and holy prayers
Bring supremacy
Fighting for our souls until the endThe battle rages on through eternity
In the fight for good and evil
Which one will succeed?Hell, fire and damnation
Written in the prophecy
Holy fire and salvation
Will our souls ever be free?
Ever be freeThe Antichrist and Nazerine
Fight the endless war
Angels, demons raging back and forth
Demonic verses holy script
The never ending fight
Will the darkness conquer ‘gainst the light?Armies of the evil
Warriors of the good battle on forever
To find the chosen oneHell, fire and damnation
Written in the prophecy
Holy fire and salvation
Will our souls ever be free?Satan’s fire, heaven’s light
The conflict never ends
Back and forth they battle for our souls
The prophecy written out
There for all to read
Some believe but others cannot seeThe battle rages on into eternity
The fight for good and evil
Which one will it be?Hell, fire and damnation
Written in the prophecy
Holy fire and salvation
Will our souls ever be free?
Ever be free
Ever be
