Here’s a real piece of crossover thrash history — the promotional concept video for Abduction, released back in 1989 by the legendary Dirty Rotten Imbeciles (D.R.I.). The video was produced to promote the band’s fifth studio album, Thrash Zone, and originally uploaded by guitarist Spike Cassidy himself in January 8, 2009.
Thrash Zone marked a defining moment for D.R.I., solidifying their fusion of punk, hardcore, and thrash metal — a style that would go on to influence countless thrash bands throughout the late ’80s and early ’90s, including Slayer. The album was their most successful release to date, spawning classics like Beneath the Wheel, which gained MTV airplay and later appeared in the video game Skate 2, as well as Abduction, which also received its own conceptual video.
Often credited as one of the key acts in shaping crossover thrash, D.R.I. started as a raw punk outfit before pushing their sound into heavier and faster territories. Their distinctive blend of styles, along with their unmistakable “moshman” logo, secured their place as icons within both the punk and metal communities.
